NAR Code of Ethics training requirements

Q: What is the requirement?

A: Every three years, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) requires REALTORS® to take a Code of Ethics training of not less than 2 hours, 30 minutes of instructional time. The training must meet specific learning objectives and criteria established by NAR.

Q: When is the deadline for this cycle?

A: The current cycle, which began on January 1, 2019, ends Dec. 31, 2021.

Q: What class can I take to fulfill the requirement?

A: You can meet the requirement by having completed one of the following options from January 1, 2019-December 31, 2021:

  • An MD, DC, or VA Code of Ethics CE class with GCAAR

  • An online Code of Ethics CE class with The CE Shop

  • An online course with NAR, including the following options: a free existing member non-CE course, a free new member non-CE course, a paid CE option, or earning the C2EX endorsement.

  • A Code of Ethics CE class with an approved CE provider, including another local association or state association

Q: How can I verify my status with NAR to see if I have already fulfilled the Code of Ethics requirement for this cycle?

A: For more information, and to check your status, visit:

Q: I’m a primary or secondary member with GCAAR. How does the reporting work? Do I need to send GCAAR proof of my course completion?

A:  GCAAR can only report Code of Ethics completion to NAR for our primary and secondary members.

If you are a primary or secondary REALTOR® member with GCAAR, and have taken an MD, DC, or VA Ethics CE class with GCAAR, we have reported your completion to NAR. You do not need to send anything to GCAAR nor NAR.

If you are a primary or secondary REALTOR® member with GCAAR, and have taken an online MD, DC, or VA Ethics class with The CE Shop via GCAAR’s link:, we received a copy of your completion certificate and reported that to NAR. You do not need to send anything to GCAAR nor NAR.

If you are a primary or secondary REALTOR® member with GCAAR and have taken an online course through NAR, including C2EX, your completion was recorded directly by NAR in their system. This applies to anyone that is a member of NAR, regardless of status with GCAAR. You do not need to send anything to GCAAR nor NAR.

If you are a primary or secondary REALTOR® member with GCAAR, and have taken a Code of Ethics CE course with:

  • the CE Shop without using the GCAAR link

  • a different local/state REALTOR® association

  • another approved third-party CE provider

We do not have record of your course completion. Please email proof of completion to so that we can report to NAR.

Q: I’m a non-member that took a GCAAR Code of Ethics CE class. How does my reporting work?

A: Your fulfillment of the Code of Ethics requirement is tied only to the local REALTOR® association(s) with which you have a primary membership. GCAAR can only report Code of Ethics completion to NAR for our primary or secondary members. This means if you took a class with GCAAR as a non-member, we were unable to report your completion to NAR nor did we report it to your primary local REALTOR® association. You must refer to your primary local REALTOR® association’s guidelines to ensure you have fulfilled their requirements. As a non-member, please email if you need to request proof of attendance for an MD, DC or VA Ethics class taken at GCAAR.

Q: I took the New Member Code of Ethics course online with NAR or as a CE course with GCAAR to meet my GCAAR New Member requirement—do I need to take another course?

A: No, a new member who has completed the New Member Code of Ethics requirement shall not be required to complete additional ethics training until the next three-year cycle.

Q: Do affiliate members need to complete the ethics requirement?

A: No, this is a requirement by NAR for its REALTOR® members.

Q: When is the next cycle?

A: The next cycle will be January 1, 2022 – December 31, 2024.
