Profession Session | Vacant Lot Scam - Red Flags and How to Prevent It
A recent scam has been affecting individuals in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and we want to make sure you know about it! The "vacant lot" or "vacant land" scam occurs when suspects search public land records and find a vacant lot that has no mortgage or lien. They contact a REALTOR posing as the property owner, then have it listed for a reasonable price. If the REALTOR/title company doesn't do their due diligence, the sale goes through. The rightful owner is left dealing with a mess and the current buyer is out both the money and land.
During this in-person lunch & learn, Detective Kim Pratt from the Montgomery County Policy Department's Financial Crimes Unit will talk more about this scam - what it is, the red flags for identifying one and helpful hints to prevent it from being successful.
