Summary of Projects
Fall 2007
Back to School Bash
GCAAR Cares delivered school supplies to area children at the Great Hopes Home in Silver Spring on August 3. GCAAR Cares also pledged $1,000 to Montgomery Housing Partnership's Community Life Programs. In addition, Cares also collected items and donated $1,000 to the Community Development and Preservation Corporation of Washington, DC.
During July, GCAAR collected hundreds of backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, and other school supplies for the drive. The donated items were separated and then distributed into 23 backpacks, one for each child at the event.
"Many families really struggle financially at the start of the school year to buy all the things their children will need," explains Sulema Middleton Stewart, the Director of Montgomery Housing Partnership's Community Life Program. "GCAAR's participation in this program is wonderful. They collected so many supplies that we are able to help some of our other sites in Montgomery County. Their support and generosity is amazing!"

Other programs include treatment foster care, social services for family reunification, parenting education, independent living, and stabilizing families in the community. Thanks to everyone who attended the lunch and additional donations, GCAAR Cares gave over $3,000 to NCCF.

 Spring 2007
Rebuilding Together
On Saturday, April 28, about 40 GCAAR Cares volunteers turned out to take part in a day of light labor for two homeowners in Washington, DC and Montgomery County as part of Rebuilding Together. The basic maintenance repairs made in only a few hours by the GCAAR Cares crew will last these homeowners for years to come.
The volunteers, clad in their red GCAAR Cares shirts, came out for three-hour shifts to Silver Spring and Northeast DC to offer their services. Some GCAAR members even brought family members or friends out to chip in for the day. It all added up to another successful project for GCAAR Cares, which has now worked with Rebuilding Together for several years in both DC and Montgomery County.
Thanks to all the volunteers who came out and helped.

 Winter 2007
Helping Hearts, Warm Hands
This Valentine’s season, GCAAR member offices around the area collected hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, and other various winter wear to distribute to area clothing shelters. About 250 items were collected over a three-week period and then donated to local charities— Shepherd’s Table in Silver Spring and the National Center for Children and Families in DC. These donations will help many area residents and families in need to keep warm during the winter season.
GCAAR REALTOR® Sonya Abney loads up several bags and boxes of winter clothing to be delivered to the National Center for Children and Families.

December 2006
End of Year Cares Donations
GCAAR Cares made two holiday donations of $3000 apiece to the Community Preservation and Development Corporation (CPDC) of DC and the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County.
The Community Preservation and Development Corporation is a non-profit organization dedicated to acquiring and developing affordable rental housing in areas with higher prices. Within the communities they develop, CPDC collaborates with residents and partners to establish place-based community development programs.
The donation made to the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County was used to support their Family Self-Sufficiency Program, a federally mandated program to assist families in public housing and Section 8 programs to achieve self-sufficiency and end dependence on welfare assistance. The program currently assists 441 families, primarily composed of single female households with one or two children.

Barrel of Books
Held during the NAR Midyear Meetings at the Omni Shoreham Hotel (a host hotel), REALTORS® from across the country attended to mix & mingle with other conference attendees and donate a book (or several) to Catholic Charities' local literacy program. Our "barrel" overflowed by the end of the night. Special thanks to the staff of Books-A-Million’s Dupont Circle location who were on site selling children’s books to attendees who may have forgotten to bring a book. In all, B-A-M sold $750 in books on site and we were able to donate more than 150 books to the worthy cause.
