GCAAR Hurricane Katrina Relief Project

Help Hurricane Katrina victims nowKatrina's done her worst; we have done our best. This miracle could not have happened without your help. Thank you for making a contribution that will have a huge impact in the life of a storm victim.

GCAAR initiated a hurricane relief project similar to the one executed for tsunami relief at the beginning of the year.

While we acknowledge the fact that many of our members have already made very generous contributions to various relief organizations, we asked for a donation from each of our members. As we have heard, the recovery period from Katrina may take years and billions of dollars. Thousands of people—including real estate professionals—may be out of work for a long time. It's very clear victims and survivors will need every penny we have raised—and EVERY PENNY that we have raised will make its way to someone in need. Not one cent will be spent on administrative costs.

Donations were collected through Friday, September 30.

In addition, some brokerages in our area matched donations.

Still want an opportunity to make a difference? Please give to the GCAAR REALTORS® CARE! Fund.

Other Ways to Help

  • Volunteer Deployment Program (Greater DC Cares & the American Red Cross)
Anyone wishing to assist disaster relief efforts at ground-zero, this program is for you. A few hours of training locally is required. This is considered a physically challenging deployment. You must be physically able to work in a disaster area without refrigeration for medications and have the ability to work in the outdoors all day. You must be willing to work long hours under arduous conditions and you may be exposed to mold, high heat & humidity and insects. And you must be willing to work in the vicinity of disaster debris, damaged facilities and related adverse conditions. The 2 week commitment is non-negotiable. If you are able to commit to 3 weeks that is even better. To sign up for the upcoming Red Cross Mass Care training, please contact Kilin Boardman-Schroyer, Program Coordinator, Greater DC Cares, at 202.777.4457.

  • MoveOn.org / Hurricane Housing.net MoveOn.org has put together a site specifically for finding housing for those in need. The Web site has a link to providers of housing for storm victims who have lost their homes and are now refugees. This web site also allows anyone to post information on the availability of housing in all 50 states. If you have information on housing, you can post it.
