Back to School Bash

In one year, the Greater Capital Area Association of REALTORS® has expanded the impact of its "Back to School Bash" backpack drive that it first launched in 2007. This year, GCAAR outfitted 30 children with backpacks and school supplies at the Great Hope Homes in Silver Spring and another 40 kids will benefit from a school supply donation to Friendship House in the District.

Two nonprofit organizations were the recipients of this year's drive; Montgomery County Partnership, a non-profit that preserves and expands quality affordable housing in Montgomery County, and Friendship House, which aims to help people find alternatives to life-long poverty, counteract the breakdown in family life, and establish partnerships with individuals in the solutions to their problems.

"Many families really struggle financially at the start of the school year to buy all the things their children will need," explains Sulema Middleton Stewart, the Director of Montgomery Housing Partnership's Community Life Program. The volunteers, clad in their red GCAAR Cares shirts, came out for three-hour shifts to Silver Spring and Northeast DC to offer their services. Some GCAAR members even brought family members or friends out to chip in for the day. It all added up to another successful project for GCAAR Cares, which has now worked with Rebuilding Together for several years in both DC and Montgomery County.

Thanks to all the volunteers who came out and helped.
